“ The 2023 vintage is set to be another remarkable one, regardless of a few ups and downs experienced along the way.
We anticipated harvesting a bit earlier this year as indicated by all phenological markers and indeed, we’ve started on the 18th of February in a section of the Merlot block. This makes it one of De Toren’s earliest harvests yet. With all the abundance of fortunate weather experienced thus far and a variety of options with regard to vineyard management and crop selection, the cellar team is awaiting the arrival of the remaining grapes with great anticipation… All there is left to do thereafter is to embrace the beautiful art of winemaking!
Another highlight, one that has never faded since 1999, is the 2020 vintage of the iconic De Toren Fusion V, our Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated blend. There were decent winter rains that saturated the soils sufficiently and our expressive 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon grapes were, from visual observation, quite smaller in size but carried greater intensity. Our 2019 vintage scored 96 points by Greg Sherwood, South African Master of Wine. A similar appreciation granted with 95 stellar points by the International reviewer, Tim Atkin. And Martin Fourie is confident that the 2020 vintage was an improvement.
“
You will notice how the 2019 vintage demonstrates many European characteristics, most likely due to the season’s cooler weather conditions. While this has brought about new levels of magic in comparison to previous vintages such as a sense of purity and a phenolic ripeness at a lower sugar level the varietal’s hallmark characteristics of balance and harmony remain pleasingly apparent.
